Out of gratitude I made this....

I decided to start this blog because I have seen so many piano teachers that work so very hard for their students and that have inspired me to help share in the teaching community.  I have enjoyed many blogs that have taught me a lot about myself and helped me with my own studio, so I thought I would give this a try.  I am hoping I can share some insight and give to the community a little, so here goes my first blog entry!

Over the past year I would have to say I have learned more then I ever have about teaching piano, and that is just from getting out there and getting a little experience actually teaching.  Although I taught a little bit in high school and some in college for my pedagogy class, I think this past year I have grown the most being on my own and needing to solve my own problems.  Something my professor taught me really helped me this past year, and that was "sometimes all you need to do is read a book".  So I would like to share a book that has helped me through my first "real" teaching year.

Professional Piano Teaching by Jeanine M. Jacobson has been a very helpful tool for me and my studio.  Although we covered part of this textbook in my pedagogy class, I wasn't able to read all of it as it covers many topics we actually didn't cover in my pedagogy class so I decided to read all of it, focusing on the exercises that were specifically for new piano teachers.  My favorite topics that the book covers are: Principles of Learning, Teaching Beginners and Elementary Students, Teaching Preschoolers, and The Business of Piano Teaching.  Many piano teachers do not know much about the business aspect of running their own studio, me being one, so I liked that this textbook covered that topic.  This textbook is a wonderful tool to keep developing your own skills and it even has exercises you can do at the end of each chapter to apply what you just read about.  I would recommend this textbook to any teacher just starting out, and even to some that would like some ideas on how to further develop their teaching abilities. And just so you know, I'm saying this as my own opinion.  No one is paying me to say anything about this book.  It has simply been a wonderful tool for me starting out teaching piano!  Do you have any piano books that you like to read?
